Engineering Manager, Mail Creation Embedded Software
Managed a software development and test organization with a portfolio of 8 new product development efforts. Utilized 20% off-shore resources (China). Successfully led the embedded software team of a major Tabletop Inserter project which enjoyed strong sales in spite of the economic downturn. Played an active role in the development and implementation of the Embedded Software Solutions (ESS) Strategic Framework. Reported to the

Engineering Manager, Trusted Coprocessor Development
Established and managed a center of excellence for all mission-critical security development including Postal Security Devices, secure print heads and infrastructure security coprocessors protecting the annual management of over $20 B in postal funds. Roles included Key Management System Steering Committee Chairman (oversight committee responsible for security related decisions comprised of the Directors of 6 stakeholder organizations) and Product Security Liaison (interfacing with International Postal Authorities and product teams). Actively participated in Universal Postal Union (worldwide postal organization) committee activities to streamline the international postal approval process.
Selected Accomplishments:
- Established an effective organization that removed security concerns
from the critical path of new product development projects while
delivering significant cost savings (multi-million dollar) and improved
ROI through an object-oriented architecture that resulted in a 50%
reduction in development/support staff.
- Improved relationships with Global Postal Authorities while meeting
security requirements cost-effectively.
- Accelerated time to market as a result of unprecedented reductions
in the time required to achieve new postal meter approvals. Approval
costs reduced by at least 33%.
Section Manager/Senior Software Engineer
Managed the Meter Products Group with responsibility for embedded software development of 9 International Postal Meter products. The portfolio consisted of the highest volume meter products, from low-end to mid-range. Software Core Team member responsible for a team of 8 engineers developing a postal mailing machine utilizing C and C++. Architected security policy and protocols for secure funds handling utilizing smart card technology.
Selected Accomplishments:
- Led the development of a Common Vault Architecture platform to support the entire postal meter product line.
- Enabled quicker time-to-market at lower cost for new Postal Meter product developments. Enjoyed development savings in excess of $1 million dollars.
- All projects were delivered to schedule and budget.
Sikorsky Aircraft, UTC, Stratford, CT 1989 – 1997
Senior Software Engineer
Technical Lead of a group of 10 engineers responsible for the development
of the head-down display man-machine interface of a light reconnaissance
helicopter. Architected the kernel and application software with an emphasis
on reconfigurability and graceful degradation. Responsible from conception
through system integration.
Co-authored standards and conventions for developing requirements using
the Real-Time Structured Analysis methodology and have authored both
detailed design and coding standards. These led to well-defined, repeatable
processes producing cohesive and understandable requirements, designs, and
documentation resulting in successful projects.
Co-chairman of the Controls and Displays (C & D) Interface Control
Working Group, whose charter was to develop an multi-company Interface
Control Document specifying all of the interfaces between the cockpit
control and display devices.
Developed the C & D Design Document sections as a member of a Tiger Team.
Generated detailed timelines, white papers, and operational sequence
diagrams necessary to allocate system requirements to the appropriate C & D
prime items.
Responsible for the software integration of the high resolution ground
mapping ground moving target track submode of a multi-mode radar system
while on temporary assignment to Norden Systems. This task was completed on
schedule despite its having been seriously behind schedule prior to my
involvement.
Completed system integration of the dual cockpit capability of a
Demonstration/Validation program on schedule, resulting in a successful
demonstration that led to contract award.
Designed, coded, unit tested, and integrated crewstation interface
software developed utilizing object-oriented design.
Conducted requirements analysis for a workstation based front-end for a
computer-aided process planning system.
Developed an automated tool to generate a detailed design document from
information contained within source code files resulting in considerable
cost and schedule savings.
Norden Systems, UTC, Norwalk, CT 1982 – 1989
Software Engineer
Designed, coded, tested, and integrated radar modal control application
tasks. Integration Coordinator of Flight Test Tiger Team.
Developed application software and a multi-mode radar system high resolution ground mapping and moving target tracking sub-mode.
Software Team Leader responsible for the design, code, unit test, and
integration of tasks for the development of a digital TACFIRE modem
utilizing a TMS32020 Digital Signal Processor.
Led the Software and Systems Integration group and
the Flight Test Integration Tiger Team.
Provided software and system support for operational test, both in the
lab and in the field, for a large Command, Control and Communications (C3)
project. Conducted requirements analysis, lesson plan review, pre‑production
product improvement, and software modification (to improve system
through‑put) and performed analysis of its Real Time Operating System
(RTOS).
Software Group and Systems Integration Leader responsible for the
Supervisor and Database Transfer functional applications groups. Designed,
coded, unit tested, and integrated applications software.
